Getting Away from the Cold
March 5, 2008
Those of us here at the Gator who are unlucky enough to live in the Northeast United States are feeling pretty blue these days as we shiver ourselves through the day. Then the Washington Post comes along with its 2008 list of islands to dismay us further.
Not of course because we don't love to hop a plane down to the Caribbean for some sun, surf, sand and in the case of many of us here the chance to blow some bubbles on the reef. But rather because we didn't think to book a trip to get over the February (ok, March) doldrums.
Not to be outdone, we came up with our own short list of warm places down south for your consideration.
One of our favorites is Grand Cayman and not just because we've been there a dozen times. It offers first class accommodation, a great beach in Seven Mile and some of the best reef and wall diving in the world. Oh yeah, we love the stingrays as well.
We go to Barbados for the sun, the surf, the reggae and the diving and the friendliness of the natives never ceases to improve our mood. OK, so they are essentially British but with a very Caribbean flair.
The nice thing about flying into St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands it the lack of an immigration line. Of course then you're forced to navigate the cruise ship hell that is downtown St. Thomas but if you can brave the crowds (and the endless merchandise imported from everywhere else) the island has lots to offer. For a truly decadent stay check out the Ritz-Carleton St. Thomas. For a bit more quiet vacation, take the ferry to Saint John put your feet up and sleep your vacation away on some of the nicest beaches in the world.
It has been awhile since we've been but we have only great memories of the Turks and Caicos. Well, the hotel basically sucked (our own fault for not doing the necessary research before hand) but the beaches were beautiful, the diving great and we got to play with the Iguana's.
Acapulco experiencing a resurgence
March 4, 2008
Once the stomping grounds of Frank Sinatra and the rat pack, Acapulco has in recent years fallen victim to an influx of spring breakers, Hooters and Wall Mart. It was a sad progression for a place that radiated glamour in the 60's. Recently, however the town has seen a resurgence. While much of the low-brow tourist traps remain, recent hotel upgrades, luxury condos and new restaurants have lent a bit of class to the place.
The New York Times did a great job telling the story what was once the place to go in Mexico. If you plan to go, make sure to consider the Acapulco Princess where Howard Hughes spent his last days.
More airport options in New York City
March 2, 2008
For those of you who travel in and out of the New York City area, there will be soon be another airport option according to the Wall Street Journal today. Stewart Airport, is an abandoned Air Force base 60 miles north of the city and will soon join LaGuardia, Kennedy and Newark as an option for fliers.
While in the short run Stewart will likely cater to discount airlines, there is a good change it might join other regional airports like Manchester, New Hampshire as being a real option for the harried travel in New York City.
