TravelGator suffers an outage
April 24, 2008

It seems to be all the rage these days so we decided to give it a try and have our own outage yesterday. At least we're in good company (Twitter...how ya doing?).

For some reason the gods of Internet sites decided yesterday was our day and our main server started to exhibit a lot of instability early in the morning and finally gave up the ghost right around breakfast. We tried diligently to revive it and by mid-afternoon decided to start from scratch and rebuild things. After much swearing, coffee and other forms of stimulant the site came back online this morning.

The good news is that no data was lost and despite some lost sleep and stress, the TravelGator tech team is alive and well. Things might not be totally back to normal for a few more days as we need to run down some open issues but for the most part we are operational again.

Now to figure out what actually happened!

UPDATE: About three days later we had similar problems crop up so we threw in the towel and replaced our main server. After what seemed like hours of rebuilding (it was) we had things up and running. Again, no information was lost but the site was unavailable for a spell. Then eighteen hours later it happened AGAIN! More hardware issues...so we started from scratch and rebuilt a new server and got it up. Things are better now but we still have some stability issues which we are working on. Hopefully in a day or so we'll back where we should be providing you with the best travel planning option on the Internet.
