A Taste of Puebla
June 30, 2009

It's been a while since we've thought about setting foot south of the border, but as the panic dies down and Mexico tries to get back to business as usual, it seemed high time we checked in on our next-door neighbors – and gave our frequent-flier miles a break here at the 'Gator.

It's hard to argue with a place like Puebla, the gastronomic capital of Mexico. Famed as a foodie favorite for such delicious dishes as mole poblano, this is a town you won't have to tackle on an empty stomach. Dig into the signature dish at one of the top tables in town, or nosh with a nuevo twist in a hot new hipster hangout. Wash it down with a local staple like pasita and you're bound to see Puebla in a rosy light.

Which isn't to say you need bites and booze to be seduced by Puebla's charm. From the graceful zócalo to the awe-inspiring cathedral and colorful mercados, Puebla rewards casual strollers as much as gorging gourmands. Check out the works of colonial and contemporary artists, then browse for antiques before taking a well-deserved breather. Don't worry if your energy starts to flag: this town is the perfect place for a sugar rush.

Boho Beauty Off to Prague
June 23, 2009

Last week we got a good taste of Philly's meat-and-potatoes charm, but this week we thought we'd Czech in on some more exotic locales here at the 'Gator. After all, with summer about to hit full swing and tourists taking Europe by storm, this might be our only chance to soak up Prague's Boho beauty before the crowds cram its cobbled streets.

Generations of travelers have been taken by this timeless town, with its castles and cathedrals rising like the remnants of a forgotten fairy tale. But Prague's gone beyond its Bohemian roots to find a more modern soul, with quirky boutiques, splashy hotels, and a growing gallery scene adding to its ageless appeal.

Of course, our favorite thing about Prague is the fact that we never have to see it on an empty stomach. This is a city that's perfected the art of eating, whether you're sampling a scrumptious sandwich or indulging your sweet tooth with a tasty tart. Check out Czech specialties like karamelovy pohar – a decadent concoction of ice cream, caramel, chocolate and walnuts – then work off all that sugar with a walking tour of this town's top pubs. Wrap up with a nightcap at a lounge with limitless views and you might be tempted to agree with Kafka's famous words: "Prague never lets you go."

Philly's Flavors
June 16, 2009

From rollickin' Rio to placid Phnom Penh, we've gotten more than our share of the exotic these past few weeks at the 'Gator. So this week we're going for a getaway that hits a bit closer to home. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't expect the unexpected in the "City of Brotherly Love".

After all, this ain't your father's Philly. While old favorites like Congress Hall and the Liberty Bell are still, er, all they're cracked up to be, this town's got a hip new vibe that proves it's not just an extension of its mega-watt northern neighbor. With chic shopping, hot hotels, and enough nightlife to please even the pickiest palate, Philly's newfound groove strikes all the right chords.

Of course, if it's the meat-and-potatoes appeal of "Rocky" and the fightin' Phils that gets your blood pumping, this town doesn't disappoint. From its Italian market to those famous cheesesteaks, Philly's blue-collar rep is well-deserved. But don't get too hung up on those tales of nasty tempers.

You just need to know how to find this city's sweet spots.
